For qualified families, the state of California offers a program called In-Home Supportive Service (IHSS), which pays an individual caregiver to stay home and care for a developmentally disabled child.
IHSS Services provides as:
1. In-Home Supportive Services are provided by independent providers/caregivers.
2. The IHSS recipient is considered the employer of his/her caregiver and is responsible for hiring, supervising and, if necessary, dismissing the provider.
